HOW ' TheOne design ' WAS BORN
ORIGIN In search of a new racing ten meter sailboat for their fleet, a company made up of devoted sailors came across numerous interesting up to date boats. But since none of them entirely fulfilled the desired outline, an idea of own production emerged. After thorough consideration, a project by Andrej Justin, managed by Mirko Ivančič was chosen to be built at Prel.ex shipyard in Slovenia. Full control over the design process, expressed large common interests, favorable manufacturing terms and accord of all involved parties, were just some of the factors leading to this decision.
OBJECTIVE Pretentious goals were present all through the shaping process. The boat had to offer speed and ease of handling in various conditions accompanied by good acceleration and maneuverability. Be sailable for anyone but demanding good skills to beat the opposition, fun on technical courses and in match racing, yet suitable for longer regattas. Simplicity of exploitation, daily use and maintenance were a must. And besides all stated above the final price had to be harshly controlled as to attract the widest array of sailors.
EXECUTION Many difficult compromises had to be taken, not to compromise the objective. Experience and creativity of the designers was really put on a test. The hull and deck are constructed of carbon due to a great offer from the builder, while the mast is aluminum for ease of maintenance and cost control. A built in retractable outboard engine saves weight and drag, but handles like an inboard. Simple carbon inner moulds add to boats stiffness and enhance the purpose of interior with only a slight weight increase. Cabin height was easily sacrificed to keep the deck race-worthy. A deep keel, an adjustable mast base, sliding deck-hatch and top brand deck gear emphasize the competitive nature of the sailboat.
VISION One design rules will precisely define the ‘TheOne design’ class. Therefore limiting the costs of running a boat in its class, keeping the boats equalized while stressing the importance of crews sailing skills. Yet the boat will allow room for additional equipment and sailing gear, enhancing the final performance when sailing in a non monotype environment.
